Lots of news to catch up on! Our palomino mare has had two fantastic chestnuts colts, by Pomelo V. Both of which are for sale. Milkbottle had an amazing palomino colt by Rocky L Claudius. Milkbottle, and her colt, Sirocco, now live in Ireland with their lovely owners, Ciaran and Diego. Florencia had a surprise foal by our naughty colt ( now gelding!) Vencejo, which also has a new owner.
We are very excited to announce that Estanquera A, which we jointly own with Karen and Ray Collison of the Aztec Stud, has given birth to a fantastic cremello colt, who we have called Iconico (also jointly owned).
He is the first cremello PRE to be born in the UK, and, as far as we know, the first to be born outside of Spain. He is an exceptional colt, whatever his colour, and we couldn't be more pleased with him!
His sire, Pomelo V, is a talented dressage horse, and Iconico is already showing promise that he will follow in his footsteps.
Our visit to the Las Cadenas stud was a great success! We had a fantastic time thanks to Lorenzo and his team. Everybody was very impressed with the facilities and horses. The standard of riding and production of the horses was also much admired. Hardly surprising, considering that their head trainer, Juandro, was himself trained at The Royal School of Equestrian Art!
There are nearly three hundred horses on the premises, and I think we saw practically all of them! They are not all for sale, as it is also a riding school and high class livery yard. My heart was taken by a lovely stallion who was bred at the stud, but is now owned by the wife of a Barcelona footballer!
We watched as a young stallion was backed for the first time, which he calmly took in his stride. Then we saw other young stallions being trained and ridden in a three ring serreta, to protect their mouths. We learnt how to teach Spanish Walk and Piaffe in hand, and the purpose behind it. Then we were given the opportunity to sit on one of the stallions and see how Spanish Walk and Piaffe felt from the saddle.
Juandro gave a display of dressage on Macaco, one of the breeding stallions. We had a BHSI and list 3 dressage judge in our party, and she was very impressed. The generous offer to have a sit on Macaco was eagerly taken up!
We met the other breeding stallions, Especial, a double Pearl, and Baturro, a double Cream. Then we visited the mares and youngstock, with their coats of many colours. We also went to visit Clavijo, their retired breeding stallion, in his lovely new home.
All this was interspersed with plenty to eat and drink, petting kittens and dogs, and catching the odd escaped budgie!
Again, many thanks to Lorenzo for his fantastic hospitality, and to Claire for organising it all!
Our Partbred PRE filly, Mecedora, has gone to her new home with Sue and Mike. She is destined to be a dressage and driving horse. So plenty to keep her active mind busy!
Well done to Aztec Acuarela and Aztec Zafira, owned by Caroline Howlett, and bred by the Aztec Stud, who came 1st and 3rd in the Partbred PRE mare class and Acuarela went on to be Reserve Partbred Champion in Hand. They are both full sisters to our Ella (Aztec's Colorada) and Kieron showed Zaffi for Caroline. They both did brilliantly jumping too!
2013 BAPSH Show
We are pleased to announce that Las Cadenas are one of the major sponsors of the 2013 BAPSH National Show at Hartpury on 26th, 27th, and 28th of July.
Reggie qualifies for finals.
Tiggi has won a first and a third at her first show of 2013. She has also qualified for the Royal London Show. According to her owner, Rebecca, she was a bit excited to start with, but settled eventually to do a lovely trot up.
Well done to both of you!
Reggie has won his first show of the season and again qualified for Trailblazers second rounds.
Well done Leanne and Reggie!
Our mare, Mill Sigilosa, had a lively, leggy, filly foal by our stallion, Macedonio-MAC on Thursday 28th June 2012. Picture taken at 4days old.
ANCCE have announced that PRE foals produced from APTO graded stallions and mares by
A. I. will now be accepted into the studbook.
They have also changed some of the grading criteria for new breeding stock. The full details can be found on the BAPSH website.
Congratulations to Shirley Gorman on her beautiful buckskin filly foal by Macedonio-MAC. She is out of Shirley's lovely Welsh x Hackney dressage mare, Curtismill Fairlady.
Regaliz, Mac's 2010 colt out of Secret, came first in a Youngstock Class, with some very nice comments from the judge. Leanne, his owner, said he behaved perfectly (Reggie, not the judge!)! Well done to you both! He's looking very good Leanne!
He also came 2nd in a Yearling Class at Holton Le Moor!

We had a brilliant time at the BAPSH Breed Show. Mac came 4th in the Morphology (Conformation + Movement) Stallions 7yrs & over, out of a strong class of 15. We are always particularly pleased with his conformation marks, as it's something that you can't change with schooling! We were very pleased with his performance in the Functionality too, as it was his first ever test, and he had never seen white boards before. Emma Thomas, of Esperanza Dressage, did a fantastic job with him. Thank you Emma! Thank you again to Ellie Tomlinson, who plaited his mane for us.
Mac also came 2nd in the Performance Awards for showing!
It was also lovely to see so many old friends and make new ones.
The top six results for the Stallions 7yrs and over Morphology are as follows:
Horse Conformation Movement Total Morpholgy Score
1 Exacto 76.25 + 20 = 96.25
2 Pasajes 76 + 18 = 94
3 Naranjal 75.25 + 18 = 93.25
4 Macedonio-MAC 75 + 18 = 93
4 Torrijo HBM 73 + 20 = 93
6 Jareta Majestuoso 73.25 + 19 = 92.50
Very well done to Jareta Majestuoso. He is half brother to our mare, Mill Sigilosa.
Our bay Hispano-Arab (Reg. as Partbred PRE) mare, Lucy, has had a filly foal by the lovely Rabicano PRE stallion Comico, owned by Geoff and Margaret Shawcross. We are delighted with her and our vet was very impressed when he came to check her over. She is a big, lively, friendly girl (the foal, not the vet!), with legs already nearly as long as her mums! She is a very, very light metallic gold bay colour with a black, brown, cream and grey tail. We have called her Mecedora, which means Rocker. A bit of double meaning, as Kieron has been in several bands and she bounces backwards and forwards like a rocking horse!
Regaliz, by our stallion Macedonio-MAC, and out of our mare, Mill Sigilosa, has been placed 4th in a Youngstock Class at his very first show! He is yearling and was up against 2 & 3 year olds. Leanne, his owner, says that he was impeccaby behaved. Clever boy Reggie and well done Leanne!
Fuego XII and Juan Manuel Munoz are currently 12th in the FEI World Individual Dressage Ranking List.
Fuego is 11th in the FEI/WBFSH World Ranking List-Dressage Horse 2010.
The PRE as a breed was 7th in the FEI/WBFSH World Ranking List-Dressage Studbook 2010. The Lusitano was 8th, above the Trakehner (9th) and Swedish Warmblood (10th).
Brackenspa Stud will be having it's annual open day on the 26th of March 2011 between 10am to 4pm.
Mac will be shown in hand at approx. 10.30am. He will be available to view at any time during the rest of the day and can be trotted up on request.
Mac has gone to James Smith and Emma Thomas for some professional schooling. He will be back at Brackenspa in time for the Stallion Open Day.

Fuego XII, ridden by Juan Manuel Munoz and owned by Miguel Cardenas, who bred our stallion, was placed 4th in the Grand Prix Special. This is a huge acheivement, considering that out of all of the horses competing only four were PRE's! He was placed ahead of such people as Isabell Werth, Imke Schelekens-Bartels and Carl Hester, proving that the PRE horse is more than able to hold it's own in the International Dressage Arena. He was also 5th in the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle.
We had a great day at the Lusitano Society Breed Show. Mac won his class, PRE Males 4yrs & over In Hand. Then he went on to win the Spanish Male Championship In Hand and then the Overall Spanish Purebred In Hand Championship!
The judge, Tony Dampier, was very impressed with him, and said he has exremely good conformation and movement.
Initially we didn't intend to compete, but thought, as we were going anyway, we might as well take a horse!
Mac refused to put his ears forward for the photos until the Reserve Champion, who happened to be a rather pretty mare, was led in front of him. I think he was a bit disappointed when he found out she wasn't the prize!
We are now finshed showing for this season, as, unfortunately, we can't make it to the Royal London Show, even though Mac has qualified.

Link to an interesting video of an interview with Juan Manuel Munoz Diaz and Fuego XII!
There is a Spanish and English version. It also has footage of the Cardenas Stud Farm.
We took our stallion, Mac, to the BAPSH National Championship Breed Show at the weekend. He came 2nd in the Stallions 7yrs and over Morphology (Conformation + Movement) Section! We're absolutely thrilled!
He received 69 marks for conformation and 19 marks for movement, which when added together gave him an overall mark of 88. The judge, Snr. Alvaro Cabrera Calero, specialises in judging Morphology classes in Spain. He has undergone extensive training in the morphology of the PRE and has even judged at SICAB.
Mac was then entered in the Functionality Section, but it became obvious in the warmup that he wasn't happy, so we withdrew him. We were very puzzled, as he usually tries his best to do what you ask. It was only as we were driving home that we realised what the problem was. We had changed his saddle a few days before the show, and then used a thin dressage numnah at the show instead of his usual saddle pad. Big mistake! Never mind, we'll be back next year, all being well, older, wiser, and with a new dressage saddle and numnah!

Another good day for Mac! We entered Mac in the Rare & Foreign Breeds In Hand Class. He won! He then went forward to the In Hand Championship and was Reserve Champion out of a large class of mixed breeds and sexes. Once again, the judge was very impressed with him. He does find it difficult to be in a mixed class with mares during the covering season, although he is very well behaved. He also qualified for the Royal London Show, which is later in the year.
Macedonio-MAC has had another successfull outing at Equifest 2010. He was 1st Spanish Purebred Horse, Spanish & Lusitano In Hand Champion and Reserve Supreme Champion Foreign Breeds In Hand. He was also 4th in the World Breeds 4yrs & over Class, which consisted of Cleveland bays, Freisians, Haflingers, Saddlebred and a Caspian!
Very exiting news! We took out stallion, Macedonio-MAC to the Gazaro Stud, near Liphook in Hampshire, to be trained for Artificial Insemination (A.I.) yesterday, 24/1/10. Fingers crossed that he takes to it! This will mean that anyone wishing to use him on Partbred PRE, or other breeds, will be able to, without having to travel their mares long distances.
When we arrived, after a 4 hour journey, he walked straight into his stable next to another stallion and starting eating his haylage. Nothing seems to bother him!
Secret (MIll Sigilosa) has had her foal. She really does live up to her name, because, just as last year, she didn't show any signs. She was turned out in the morning, as usual, and promptly produced her foal! He is a tall chap with very long black legs. We have named him Regaliz, which means liquorice, as that's what his legs remind us of! He is for sale.
Our stallion, Macedonio-MAC won the Iberian In-hand class, Champion Iberian In-hand and Highest Placed PRE. We were especially pleased, because the judge, Jane Rabagliati, was really impressed with him and said he was a very good example of the breed.
He had covered a mare the previous evening, so was feeling a bit frisky, much to everyones amusement!
Mac is now back at stud, fully A.I. trained. Fresh or chilled semen will be available.
